Turtips

Tips for an enjoyable stay at Solhaugen

Route description

The address is Åndalsvegen 205, but Google maps may be wrong and send you up Bringslivegen.

Drive road 662 from the west, Jendem: exit at the first sign Åndal just after Bringslivegen over the bridge. Road 662 from the east, Malmefjorden: turn left at the second sign Åndal just before Bringslivegen. Do not take Bringslivegen but Åndalsvegen.

Follow Åndalsvegen for 200 m and turn right after the white house. After 60 m, just before the garage of the yellow house, turn right along the yellow garage wall. Parking after 80 m at the intersection. Follow the trail for 60 m to the cabin Åndalsvegen 205. Fetch the key from the keybox beside the entry door.

Electric cars: only in a pinch, since it is on the brink of what the switchboard can manage. Max 9 A via the 60-m extension cord that is present. Use the outlet above the cooking stove through the window.

Contact/Emergency: You can reach us at +47-97724503 (Gerard) or +47-99240378 (Turid). Emergency number in Norway is 113. Fire 110. Police 112.

Grocery stores: Coop Prix at Hollingen, 3 km to the west. Kiwi in Malmefjorden 15 km to the east.

Note that there are quite many ticks in the area. In summer check every evening for ticks. As long as you remove them within 24 h there should be no risk of infection. Use a tick remover or wet your finger and move it around on the tick until it comes off (sometimes after several minutes). Never scratch or pull it off.

Use any food in the kitchen that you like. Just let us know if something runs out.

Please remember not to use the toilet at the bathroom inside as it is not connected. Use the compost toilet in the annex building 😊. Place some wood shavings (from under the right lid) in the toilet after use. Leave the ventilation on after you leave, and all the time when you are not using the annex. If you use the annex, it can be a little noisy and you can switch it off during the night.

You can adjust the water temperature in the hot shower by the red knob on top of the hot water tank (remove the loose lid on top). Screw towards G for hotter water, towards T for cooler water. The temperature regulator on the tap itself is not working. Remember to open the window and ventilate well after showering.

A warmer down bed duvet (blanket) is underneath the bed in the sleeping room. Extra blankets can be found in the living room.

Wood for the wood stove can be found in the green box beside the stove as well as beside the shed outside.

Some nice trips in the area:

-          Download the app "Topo GPS Norway" for 39 kr and you will have online topo maps of all trails and mountains whole of Norway. Alternatively use the paper maps that are present on the book shelves beside the eating table.

-          Trollkyrkja (The Troll Church), a fantastic marble stone cave with underground river about 20 km to the east between Elnesvågen and Eide. Parking lot marked with Trollkyrkja, nice and rough 1.5 h ramble up the mountain to reach the caves. Do not forget a torch and sturdy boots. Pretty lake right above the caves. You can add to the tour by hiking up, or crossing over, Trolltinden (887 m), but this walk is for the experienced mountain walkers.

-          Jendemsfjellet; 633 m; the "pyramid" right behind the cabin. Easy walk with some stoney sections and gorgeous pine forest at the lower reaches. Shortest to start from Helset, nicest to start from right north of Jendem at a signposted parking area.

-          Skoften; 368 moh, a short hike with an incredible view for the modest effort. Start from Sylte skole (north-east side) or from Kolberg (south side), or walk right over the hill.

-          Åndalsvatnet, the "next" lake in the valley. Very nice swimming and sunbathing area 1.5 km along the Åndalsvegen – take off to Åndalssetra at the curve at the southern tip of the gravel Åndalsvegen road, go through the gate, take the first gravel road to the right and after 200 m you will see this lovely grassy area with a bench and a roof and some chairs and fireplace.

-          Åndalssetra is a nice walk or drive 3 km up the gravel road. Nice grill spot and sitting area available for everyone. You can also go for walks from there in beautiful undisturbed pine forest to the top of e.g. Storfjellet (590 m), Valltua (586 m), and even all the way over to Molde. A very nice and undervisited area with long-range views to Inner Romsdal and the Atlantic.

-          Otrøya, a short ferry ride away from Julneset (10 min drive) has numerous hiking mountains and even the famous Midsundtrappene, sherpa-built staircases to the top of various steep mountains, e.g. Rørsethornet (659 m) on the north side (the longest sherpa stairs in Norway!) or Digergubben above Midsund (527 m).

-          Gjengkleivvatnet (434 m), from Rødalssetra north of Malmefjorden. An exceptionally beautiful valley, and almost guaranteed sightings of white-tailed sea eagles.

-          Julsundet – very popular outdoor climbing area from Eidskrem

-          Thai food at Nam Nam Thai behind the Kiwi in Malmefjorden. OK Thai food, not top of the bill.

-          Knutepunktet at Bunnpris Sylteosen – local and traditional food, as well as fish, at a reasonable price.

-          Many restaurant options in Molde.

-          Moldebadet – a very nice swimming and water playing indoor arena close to the stadium. Moldebadet.no

-          Molde klatresenter – climbing centre in Molde. Moldeveggen.no

-          Bud – easy coastal hiking, visiting traditional fishing harbours, outing to Bjørnsund

-          Farstadsanden, 30 km away, nice beach for swimming, windsurfing, wavesurfing and sunbathing (when the weather cooperates 😊)
