Detailed description/information

Fishing the 120 lakes Oppdal Public lands can by very very good, and some of these lakes are known as the best mountain lake fishing in Norway. This area covers portions of Dovrejfell – Sundalsfjella National Park, parts of Trollheimen, and the protected Knutshø area.

Trout are by far the dominant fish species here, but there are char to be found in some of the lake. One of the lakes is also home to a healthy population of grayling. In most of the trout lakes you will find trout between 1 to 1.5 kilos. The fishing here can be very good, but like all mountain lakes there can be times when it is very difficult to catch fish. In the lakes containing char (roughly 30), the fish population is generally very large with a many smaller fish. In these lakes you will also find trout in some of these lakes, and here you will have a shot at some very large trout that feed primarily on small char.

These public lands are managed actively, and there are put and take fish set out in some of the lakes when necessary. In Orkelsjøen and a handful of other managed lakes such as Unndalsvatnet and Gjevilvatnet you will find Eurasian Minnow. This species is invasive and we ask that you are careful not to transfer these fish to other lakes.

In addition to great fishing, Oppdal Public Lands also offer plenty of alternatives to enjoy nature besides fishing. There is a very unique geology throughout the area, which allows for a unique flora with many rare plant species. The bird life is also very rich in many locations. This area is important for livestock and reindeer. The reindeer in Østfjella (knutshø) and in Snøhetta are wild, while the reindeer in Trollheimen are tame.
